How Creative Self-Expression Evolves Through Levels of Consciousness

As a repatterning practitioner who regularly facilitates group sessions exploring consciousness development, I'm fascinated by how our creative expression naturally evolves as we grow through different levels of awareness. In my monthly PhD (Personal Holographic Discoveries) group work, I consistently observe how each stage of consciousness brings its own unique flavor to artistic expression.

At the earliest Magic (Magenta) level, art emerges as pure instinctual expression - think of children's finger paintings or prehistoric cave art. There's an unfiltered quality here, where creativity flows directly from sensation and emotion without self-consciousness. I smile, remembering a favorite art piece I created with the children in one of my first day care jobs.  While doing the late Friday afternoon weekly cleanup, I scrolled 8 feet of 36” wide butcher paper along the floor and dumped all of the leftover tempera paints in splotches along the center of the paper. Covering each of 5 children in garbage bag ‘smocks’ I invited them to hand-paint. They really got into the effects of mixing colors and creating movement on paper. It was a masterpiece I treasured for a number of years!

Moving into the Mythic (Amber) stage, we see art becoming more structured and traditional. Religious iconography, folk art traditions, and classical forms dominate. Artists at this level often focus on preserving cultural heritage and expressing eternal truths through established symbols and techniques. I always think of my grandmothers treasured print of the Last Supper hanging in the living room.

The Rational (Orange) level brings technical mastery and innovation. Here we find photorealistic paintings, architectural precision, and art that demonstrates skill and rational understanding. Think Renaissance masters who used mathematical principles in their compositions or modern digital artists pushing technical boundaries. This level reminds me of the puzzling yet delightful drawings of M.C. Escher.

At the Pluralistic (Green) stage, art becomes more experimental and inclusive. Mixed media installations, collaborative community art projects, and works that challenge cultural norms emerge. Artists here often focus on social commentary and giving voice to marginalized perspectives. Here I think of the many statement-type community quilts created to mobilize a community around a cause, such as the Aids Memorial Quilt. I remember how it took my breath away to see it pictured.

The Integral (Teal) level introduces a fascinating synthesis. Artists begin weaving together multiple styles, traditions, and perspectives into coherent new forms. They might combine ancient techniques with modern technology or blend sacred geometry with abstract expressionism. The focus shifts to exploring consciousness itself through art. This level reminds me of Lawren Harris, a Group of Seven Canadian artist who did beautiful landscapes. In his later years, he began painting in abstracts and geometric shapes, completely different from when he first began. When asked about this change, he replied, “I am searching for the summit of my soul… up there where the universe sings.”

At the highest stages (Turquoise and beyond), creative expression becomes increasingly subtle and profound. Art at these levels often touches the ineffable - think of certain minimalist Zen paintings or works that somehow manage to convey both emptiness and fullness simultaneously. LOL – this could very well describe my housekeeping! For this is a level of expression I have yet to understand. Suggest an example of this in the comments below.

What fascinates me most in my group sessions is watching how individuals naturally gravitate toward different forms of creative expression as their consciousness evolves. Someone might start with rigid, technically perfect works, then gradually loosen into more experimental forms as they develop. Others might begin with chaotic emotional expression and slowly discover deeper structure and meaning. It doesn’t matter where you are today, start creating and your expression will evolve with you.

The beauty of understanding these developmental stages is that it helps us honor all forms of creative expression as valid and necessary parts of human evolution. Whether we're looking at a child's first crayon drawing or a master's contemplative installation, each represents a perfect expression of that level of consciousness.

In my work, I've found that simply understanding this evolutionary arc helps creators relax into their current expression while staying open to natural development. There's no need to force "higher" forms - authentic growth happens organically as consciousness expands.
